Lethal Habit - Chapter Nineteen
Chapter Nineteen
The next day Nadine was sitting in a restaurant reading a paper. Audrey Romanov walked in with her husband Peter and noticed Nadine. She went up to her.
“Evelyn?”
Nadine looked up.
“Oh hello.”
“We heard about the terrible accident. Did you know the person who was killed?”
“No, he was a friend of someone. It’s just tragic. I was hoping somehow you wouldn’t hear about it, but I guess that was wishful thinking.”
“I was surprised to find you in London. I thought you’d be traveling.”
“Plans changed. The trip got delayed.”
“So, you’re staying in London?”
“Yes I am.”
“Well, I’m sorry it happened when you were there, just awful. Nice seeing you, Evelyn.”
She left and sat down with Peter. Nadine left the restaurant.
Audrey called Morris.
“Detective, I just saw her.”
“Who?”
“Evelyn Nassar, the woman who rented the apartment.”
“Did you find out where she’s living?”
“Somewhere in London. I didn’t think it appropriate to ask for her address.”
“Of course. Where did you see her?”
“At The Copper Skillet. I’m there with my husband. She left about five minutes ago.”
“I’ll come by the restaurant and see if I can find anyone that might know her and where she lives.”
Nadine picked up an uneasy feeling from Audrey; that she might be in contact with the police. She’d learned not to ignore her ‘woman’s intuition’. How would she explain the railing, assuming the police had been by and noticed it. The safest course was for her to leave London, but she still wanted to deal with Erik.
Morris went to the restaurant and went to speak with the manager.
“I’m Detective Morris with the London Police Department.”
“Brian Jones. How may I help you?”
“Do you remember a woman sitting at a table here about an hour ago?”
“Young and attractive?”
“I would say so.”
“Yes, Nadine has come here a few times if that’s who you’re looking for. What’s this all about?”
“You say here name is Nadine?”
“Yes.”
Morris took out a picture from the video surveillance.
“Is this her?”
“Yes, that’s her. What’s this about Detective?”
“She may have information involving a recent murder I’m working on.”
“Oh, my.”
“Do you know where she lives?”
“No, I don’t.”
“If she comes in again, I’d like you to contact me right away. Here’s my card.”
“Will do detective. Anything else?”
“No, just be sure to call me if you see her. It’s very important.”
“You have my word.”
Morris left the restaurant now knowing that Evelyn Nassar was Nadine. ‘Who is this person?’ he thought to himself. Hopefully, he’d find out, but he wasn’t sure he ever would.
