Lethal Habit - Chapter Eighteen
Chapter Eighteen
Morris arrived at the high rise and had security inform Audrey that the detective was here. Before he went up, he flashed his badge and proceeded to ask the security guard a few questions.
“Were you here when the incident occurred?”
“Yes, I was.”
“Did you notice anything suspicious?”
“No. Just a bunch of people going to a party. They were well dressed and didn’t look like the rowdy type.”
“Anyone stand out?”
“There was a man.”
“What can you tell me about him.”
“He was rather arrogant. I noticed that.”
“What did he say to give you that impression?”
“Just his attitude, like he was bothered that I asked him where he was going.”
“Did you get his name?”
“Let me check. Yes, Steven Forbes.”
“That’s the man who fell to his death.”
“Wow, I guess bad manners has a steep price.”
Morris suppressed a smile.
“I’ll need to see your security footage of the woman who rented the apartment while Mrs. Romanov was away.” Morris told him.
“I can get that for you, sir.”
“I’m going to see Mrs. Romanov now. I’l;l pick them up after I’m done.”
Morris got in the elevator and went up to Audrey’s apartment. He knocked and she immediately answered.
“Please come in Detective.”
He noticed the nice furniture and entertainment center.
“Can I get you something to drink Detective?”
“No thank you. Why don’t we go out to the balcony to look at the railing.”
“Certainly.”
He followed her down a hallway and through a room which led to the balcony. She opened the sliding glass door as he followed her outside.
“That’s quite a drop” he said.
“Yes. Certain death. If we ever have children, we’ll move.”
He walked over to the railing.
“Do you see those seams Detective?”
“I most certainly do. And you’re sure they weren’t here before you rented the place.”
“One hundred percent.”
He took some pictures on his phone. They went into the living room. He asked her questions about the mysterious renter, but none of it was helpful to his investigation. He thanked her and left. The security had gathered all the video evidence. Morris took them all and headed back to the station.
